Friendship in the Harry Potter books

Friendship Month | Flaming Word Ministry

Where to begin…..

It would be obvious to just talk about a trio but there are so many other friendships that are overlooked in the series so am going to write about them today and tackle the trio next week.

Lavender Brown And Parvati Patil

Pretty much from their first year, these two girls are always side-by-side. They are loyal friends throughout their entire time at Hogwarts, and they have one of the most consistent friendships in the entire series.

They shared a dormitory throughout the series (along with 3 other girls one of them being Hermione). From the very first year they would discuss everything including: Divination, gossip, fashion, in fact it was Parvati who told Lavender that Hermione was crying in the girls’ bathroom after Ron made fun of her during a Charms class.

By the sixth year Parvati also became slightly annoyed by Lavender’s romance with Ron Weasley. Although Parvati initially was supportive of her friend’s feelings for Ron, as the two seemed to whisper and giggle about him before they began ‘going out’ , Parvati was very embarrassed by the obsessiveness to which Lavender threw herself into the relationship. Lavender and Ron were often seen snogging in public, she also started getting possessive when he was with other girls. Despite this setback Ron and Lavender were not meant to be and by the end of the sixth year Parvati and Lavender remained close as ever.

Sadly, Lavender was killed after being savaged by Fenrir Greyback in the Battle of Hogwarts. It is unknown how Parvati took the news, but it can be assumed she was devastated by the loss of her best friend.

Dean Thomas And Seamus Finnigan

Dean and Seamus were also best friends during their time at Hogwarts. They grew close to each other during their first year at Hogwarts when they became dorm mates. The two were often seen together at school, and outside of schoolo when Dean attended the Quidditch World Cup with Seamus and his mother. Seamus initially believed the Ministry of Magic and the Daily Prophet which went against Harry Potter’s claim that Voldemort had returned, but this did not appear to have affected his friendship with Dean, who believed Harry and by the end of the sixth year they were both members of Dumbledore’s army.

Seamus was also displeased when Dean was chosen as the replacement Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team over him when Katie Bell was injured, but again, the two still remained best friends and supportive of each other. Since Dean could not return to Hogwarts for his final year as he was half muggle, the two did not see each other for some time, and they missed each other greatly. When Dean eventually did return to Hogwarts in to fight in the final battle, Seamus was so excited to see him that he even ran to hug him.

Sirius Black and Remus Lupin (and James Potter).

As Sirius’ relationship with his relatives deteriorated, he gained lifelong friendship in James Potter and Remus Lupin.

When they discovered that Remus was a werewolf. To support him, Sirius, James, and their other friend Peter secretly became Animagi. This allowed them to accompany Remus during his transformations and keep him under control. Sirius took the shape of a huge black dog, from which he gained the nickname ‘Padfoot’. James would become a stag and would be known as ‘Pongs’ and Peter would become a rat known as ‘Wormtail’. The four friends called themselves ‘The Marauders’ and used the nicknames ‘Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs’. They also created the Marauders Map, which allowed them to see where everyone in the castle was at a given time which allowed them to sneak around and avoid teachers during their time at Hogwarts.

After Hogwarts Sirus remained best friends with James and attended James’ wedding to Lily Evans as best man. When their son Harry was born, James and Lily named Sirius godfather. They remained best friends up to James’ death.

After joining the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius found himself very mistrusting and at high levels of stress due to the war against Lord Voldemort. He even no longer trusted his old friend Remus Lupin, suspecting he was a spy and excluding him from important information. Therefore, he did not reveal to Remus that he decided not to be the Potters’ Secret-Keeper when they became targets of Lord Voldemort, instead giving the job to Peter. This turned out to be a fatal mistake as Peter betrayed them all leading to the deaths of James and Lily. He was sent to Azkaban for Peter’s crimes, and Remus initially believed that he was guilty. After he escaped from prison i he told Remus the truth and, together, they planned to kill Peter and the two reclaimed their friendship, before Sirius’ death two years later.

The ending of the three Marauders who had stayed true to their friendship to the very end — James, Sirius, and Remus — was bittersweet: though they all lost their lives to the two wizarding wars, it can be theorised that they were reunited in death, never to be parted again, as seen when Harry summoned the three of them with the Resurrection Stone… this got deep real fast all of a sudden.

Ginny Weasley And Hermione Granger

While Hermione is mostly shown hanging out with Harry and Ron because the story is about Harry, Hermione is also good friends with Ginny. The books mention this in passing several times.

Hermione was one of Ginny’s best female friends and her confidante. Ginny was a year below Hermione in Hogwarts, and they had become close by Ginny’s second year when Hermione comforted Ginny when the presence of Dementors upset her . Hermione stayed in Ginny’s room during her frequent visits to the Burrow during summer vacations. Also Ginny was the only one that Hermione confided in when Viktor Krum asked her to the Yule Ball, and the only one who knew that she had kissed him at least once. Ginny had also told Hermione about her teaching herself how to fly and about her relationship with Michael Corner before her family and most others were aware of either.

Hermione even would go on to give Ginny advice on how to deal with her feelings for Harry. However, Ginny was one of the few outside of the trio who was not afraid to stand up to Hermione when she felt she was wrong, for example when Hermione scolded Harry Potter for using the Sectumsempra spell.

Eventually the two became sisters-in-law through Hermione’s marriage to Ron, and Hermione is even the godmother of Ginny’s oldest child.
